De Camp's Phonetic Articles
A Bibliography of L. Sprague de Camp's Le Maître Phonétique Articles
by Brian Kunde
Compiled to correct in part the particularly weak coverage of these in the standard De Camp: an L. Sprague de Camp Bibliography, compiled by Charlotte Laughlin and Daniel J H Levack (hereinafter L/L). Items from Le Maître Phonétique were generally printed in the International Phonetic Alphabet and phonetic spelling, are here rendered in standard English script and spelling, as in L/L. Only initial appearances treated, not reprints (most items, however, were never reprinted). Number in parantheses is of entry in the "Non-Book Appearances: section of L/L. An "i" after number indicates L/L citation is incomplete (missing enumeration and/or pagination or incomplete pagination). An "e" after number indicates L/L citation is erroneous (journal name, article title, enumeration, date, or pagination provided is wrong). An asterisk indicates there is no entry in L/L. --BPK.
The organ of the International Phonetic Association, of which de Camp was a member from 1936 onward, and a contributing member beginning in 1937. Le Maître Phonétique had the peculiarity of printing most of its content in phonetic spelling and the International Phonetic Alphabet, which makes reading it a tough slog for the uninitiated. The practice was later mercifully dropped by its successor title, the Journal of the International Phonetic Association, except for transcriptions. De Camp's first appearance in the journal is his initial listing in the list of members in the Apr./Jun. 1936 issue, p. 42: "364. Sprague de Camp, L., 7A Cambria Apts., 351 West 55th Street, New York City." His contributions, consisting of both articles and transcriptions, commenced in the Jul./Sep. 1937 issue and ran almost uninterrupted through the Jul./Dec. 1946 issue. He contributed more sporadically in the late 1940s through the early 1950s, with pieces appearing Jul./Dec. 1949, Jan./Jun. 1951-Jul./Dec. 1952, and Jul./Dec. 1953. After a long hiatus, additional sporadic contributions appeared in the journal and its successor, Journal of the International Phonetic Association, in the 1970s.
